Condensate Corrosion Control If the condensate system is not properly protected, corrosion can result and lead to leaks and possible shutdown. As corrosion takes place, iron and copper compounds are washed back into the boiler systems and can plug up deaerators and form deposits in the economizer and the boiler. Through proper treatment, you can prevent a decrease in boiler efficiency, and the overheating.
The problem: carbon dioxide, oxygen and ammonia are the common gases that cause corrosion in condensate systems. As carbon dioxide dissolves, it forms carbonic acid, which lowers the PH, causing metal corrosion. When oxygen is also present, the corrosion process is accelerated. In systems containing copper alloys, ammonia is very corrosive if the PH is not maintained and, here again, oxygen increases the corrosion rate.
